NIST Extra-Curricular Activities Programme
Welcome to NIST's Extra-Curricular Activities Programme
It is with great pleasure that we introduce to you the Extra-Curricular Activities Programme (ECA) at NIST. We are very proud of the huge range and diversity of activities available at our school. The programmes operate throughout the school year with opportunities available to students during the course of the normal school week as well as on weekends. Students who participate in our ECA programme are rewarded by enjoying enhanced skill development, the learning of new and different activities and an opportunity to share with their peers enjoyment, excitement and challenges not normally available in an inner city environment.

We hope that parents who navigate this site will enjoy what they see and gain a sense of the benefits and opportunities that a NIST student experiences during the course of a NIST year. The school year is divided up into three activity sessions. For the 2011/2012 school year the three sessions will be from

  • Session 1:  Wednesday, August 31, 2011 to Friday, November 04, 2011
  • Session 2:  Monday, November 07, 2011 to Friday, February 03, 2012
  • Session 3:  Monday, February 06, 2012 to Friday, May 04, 2012
Students can sign up for activities 1-2 weeks before the start of the session. To sign up for courses you must login. If you do not remember either your username or password, please contact the ECA Coordinator's office.

SportsFalcon Tennis ClubFalcon Tennis Academy 2011-12
Elementary Program
Every day the Falcon programme helps our students to learn not just a sport, but other qualities such as self-confidence, sportmanship and the habits of an active, healthy lifestyle. We are committed to making sure that all kids have an opportunity to play and learn from this lifetime sport. We take a great deal of pride in our commitment to provide you with a fun tennis environment and the professional coaching staff to help your child learn and improve. Over the duration of the session, students should begin to have a better understanding of the fundamentals: contact and balance, an introduction to basic racket skill and movement skills to improve hand/eye coordination using mini tennis lots of fun games…

We have the Falcon Nest Programme for Y1-Y3 and the Fledgling Falcon Programme for Y3-Y7. All programmes are offered five days a week from 2.30 to 3.30 pm. We recommend that juniors sign up for at least 2 days week to maximize their development.

Secondary Program
The Flying Falcon programme is designed for the beginner and intermediate players of secondary age. At the beginning of each school session all players are evaluated and placed into three sections according to their age, ability level, and goals. These three sections have been created for coaching and organizational purposes and are named; Flying Gold and Flying Silver sections.

The vision of the Falcon programme is to create an environment where our players can move into a slightly more advanced setting with the coaches carefully monitoring the growth and development of the players to ensure their progress. The Falcon programme emphasizes: hand/eye coordination and movement development while learning the basic rules of tennis including scoring, and helping the player’s progress with the fundamentals of stroke development. Each player is urged to strive to move into a more advanced section or programme (i.e. Falcon) this should this be their goal.

The Falcon programme is a one hour programme from 3:30-4:30pm Monday through Saturday. The enrollment limit is 12 players per term.

Each player needs to bring their kit, tennis shoes, and racket to practice. If your child needs a racquet we can make a suitable recommendation.

SportsScuba ClubScuba club ECA for School Year 2011 - 2012

We would like to invite anyone interested in joining the Scuba Club to a meeting next Thursday, 25th August in Ms. Moi’s room, new Elementary building, room 3304 at 2:45pm. You must be at least 15 years old and a good swimmer. We are offering a PADI open water dive certification course for those who are not yet qualified as divers. Our aim is to have the certification course completed before November so we can organise dive trips for the rest of the year.
If you already have a dive certification or completed one with Scuba Club last year please come to the meeting too so we can register your interest and begin to see which dates would be suitable for dive trips in the year ahead. We would love to plan at least one overnight dive trip this year however this depends on getting the program up and going as soon as possible, with dates set. We would ask that you bring a schedule of exams, due dates for coursework etc. for the year if possible, as this will help us to schedule dates for dives that don’t conflict with school work and especially busy times.
Please note that this is not an ECA that runs every single week, rather times are co-ordinated with our PADI Dive Instructor and those students who want to get PADI certified. Dive trips will be either on Saturdays or Sundays periodically throughout the year.

If you would like to get in touch with Ms. Moi or Ms. Caroline prior to the meeting our email addresses are as follows:
cscott@nist.ac.th
mlitchfield@nist.ac.th
Looking forward to seeing you all!

At NIST we care about the community within Bangkok and make relationships with fellow Thai children. One on-going relationship is with the Community Center in the Klong Toey slums. Within the last year children from the Community Center have been invited to NIST on Saturdays to use the facilities, while NIST students have been invited to help and play with the Community Center students. We would like to continue this relationship on a weekly basis and are inviting year 6 students (8 maximum) to volunteer as an ECA. Each week we will plan and organise activities including academic, sports and music. Transportation to and from NIST will be provided. OthersThe WRITERS' BLOC “The WRITERS' BLOC is NIST's student writing and editorial ECA. WRITERS' BLOC aims to build its audience and visibility within the NIST community, while establishing its own identity as a voice for students. The editors have the challenge of finding, shaping and developing that distinctive voice.
If you sign up for this ECA you will be part of a team editing our forthcoming publications, recruiting writers and soliciting content, and designing hard copy publications. The editorial team makes its own decisions about content and style, so you will have a high degree of autonomy. It is excellent experience for anyone interested in journalism or publishing, and a notable activity to include in personal profiles for school and university applications.

The ECA also fulfils an important need in any learning community, provides a platform for talented individuals with something to say, and brings together people with an interest in writing and creativity.
Pls. View The WRITERS’ BLOC at:

Meetings take place at times convenient to participants, to be announced once we have our team together – but much of the work takes place online.

Elementary Program
Every day the Falcon programme helps our students to learn not just a sport, but other qualities such as self-confidence, sportmanship and the habits of an active, healthy lifesstyle. We are committed to making sure that all kids have an opportunity to play and learn from this lifetime sport. We take a great deal of pride in our commitment to provide you with a fun tennis environment and the professional coaching staff to help your child learn and improve. Over the duration of the session, students should begin to have a better understanding of the 3 fundamentals: including contact and balance, an introduction to basic racket skill and movement skills to improve hand/eye coordination using mini tennis lots of fun games…

Please contact ECA office or Coach Ko (thanraweep@nist.ac.th) if you have further queries

SportsScuba ClubScuba club ECA for School Year 2011 – 2012 (2nd session)
We would like to invite anyone interested in joining the Scuba Club for the second ECA session to contact Ms. Moi Litchfield or Ms. Caroline Scott. You must be at least 15 years old and a good swimmer. You don’t need to be a qualified diver. This session we want to start doing some cool activities in our own pool in addition to arranging some dives. If you wish to get qualified then this can be arranged too and if you would just like to come and have some fun in the pool and see what diving is all about, that’s great!
If you already have a dive certification or completed one with Scuba Club last year please register your interest for this session and let’s begin to see which dates would be suitable for dive trips and fun pool games during the rest of the year. We would love to plan at least one overnight dive trip this year however this depends on having adequate numbers of you guys who are interested!
Please note that this is not an ECA that runs every single week, rather times are co-ordinated with our PADI Dive Instructor and Mermaids rep. It’s a fun and easy going ECA to belong to and the more people we have the more possibilities for underwater activities/games etc. we have. We will want to schedule the dives for Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year, aiming at one every six weeks or so. You don’t have to come to all the dives and we will work out a schedule so it doesn’t conflict with a time when you have lots of work etc.
Please register your interest by signing up to the ECA and it would be great if you could drop Ms. Moi or Ms.Caroline an email too. Once we have all the sign ups, we will hold a meeting early on in the second ECA session…come on, you know you want to!

CommunityCommunity ServiceCommunity Service
At NIST we care about the community within Bangkok and make relationships with fellow Thai children. One on-going relationship is with the Community Center in the Klong Toey slums. Within the last year children from the Community Center have been invited to NIST on Saturdays to use the facilities, while NIST students have been invited to help and play with the Community Center students. We would like to continue this relationship on a weekly basis and are inviting year 6 students (8 maximum) to volunteer as an ECA. Each week we will plan and organise activities including academic, sports and music. Transportation to and from NIST will be provided. This is a worthwhile activity for students to help out the local community in Bangkok.

IWICA Chess Club
People say chess is board game, sport, art, or primitive technology. We, at IWICA use chess as an educational tool to amplify a child’s imagination, logical thinking, problem solving skills, concentration, patience, memory, reasoning and critical thinking skills. Chess was founded in India during the 6th century thus making it the oldest board game. Today, Chess is the 2nd most played sport in the world with more than a billion players in over 150 countries. Extensive research around the world have shown that chess players on average had a higher IQ level than non-players. Chess also been proven to help children to choose better choices from a large number of options. Children have been known to improve in pattern recognition by playing chess. These are some or the reasons why Chess has been included in school curriculum in nearly 30 countries including American, England, Australia and India. Benefits of chess is continuing to baffle researchers even today. Chess has been played by prominent people in history such as Napoleon Bonaparte, Ludvig Van Beethoven, Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, Benjamin Franklin and many more. And most importantly chess is a fun pastime for children.
IWICA Chess Academy is the 1st Chess Academy in Thailand which conducts group courses and private classes from Beginner to Advance Levels for 4 year old children up to adults. IWICA students will get exposure to City, National and International Level Chess Competitive Events. All IWICA teachers are experienced and qualified chess instructors.

Fun activities that teach us to think in new and creative ways. Thinking Keys come from the ideas in Joan Dalton’s book, “Adventures in Thinking”. It involves teaching children to think outside the box. There are 20 different ‘thinking keys’, each involves the children to work in small groups and solve a problem. Eg. Key – ‘The Invention’: design a machine for digging worms out of the sand, cleaning santa’s sleigh etc. Key – ‘Different Uses ‘: Find 10 different uses for a fishing net, find 10 different uses for a Santa suit. They are designed to be fun and develop creative thinking.

Do you have lots of creative ideas?
Can you think ‘outside the box’?
Are you good at solving problems?
Can you work well in a team?
Do you like to perform?

If you answered yes to three or more of these questions then this is the ECA for you! Tournament of Minds will require you to work together in a team to solve a long-term problem in one of four disciplines:
Language Literature
Maths Engineering
Social Science
Applied Technology

In addition to solving the problem, your team will need to develop a ten minute performance to demonstrate your solution to a panel of judges and a live audience on Tournament Day. Your team will also face an unseen ‘spontaneous challenge’ on the day. The Bangkok Tournament will be held on Sunday 1st April when your team will have the chance to compete against other teams from NIST as well as teams from other international schools.
If you sign up for this ECA you will need to commit for ECA sessions 2 and 3. In session 2 we will be focusing on:

An introduction to TOM Creative problem-solving skills
Cooperation and team building:

OthersIncy Wincy Children’s Yoga Program Incy Wincy Yoga classes are divided into 5 phases; breathing exercises; visualisation; trust and cooperation games; Hatha yoga poses and relaxation time. Above all we provide a fun activity for children giving them a number of benefits. All classes are taken by native English speakers qualified as children’s yoga instructors.
The Monday class focuses on gross motor development while having a secondary emphasis on strength, agility and endurance. Cooperative and problem solving activities are also used to help develop the child’s social skills. All activities are carried out in a non-competitive and accepting environment.
The Wednesday class focuses on strength, agility and endurance building. Again we use activities that allow children to explore and develop their personal strengths mentally, physically and socially. The children’s yoga class does not strive for perfection; rather it allows the child to explore their personal limits in a supportive environment.
With proven results from more than 6 years of providing children’s yoga, our goal is to improve a student’s concentration and lower their stress levels helping them to achieve greater success at school. Research into children’s Yoga conducted in Los Angeles found that children’s Yoga participation helped improve not only the students’ physical health but also their performance academically in school.

Following on from a very successful start in 2009-2010 NIST Development Bank requires students who are interested in helping the Bank develop its systems and processes to ensure that it achieves its aims and objectives. Students will be working collaboratively to help workers at school develop their own business opportunities and have made several loans at the end of the last school year. This is a great ECA for those with a social conscience who want to work collaboratively with other students across age groups to help other people. This year we will be focusing on the loans we have made, identifying new areas of need and developing further the Bank’s documentation.

Pls. View The WRITERS’ BLOC at:
http://portal2.nist.ac.th/secschool/english/General/Creative%20Writing.aspx

Meetings take place at times convenient to participants, to be announced once we have our team together – but much of the work takes place online.

OthersTournament of Minds (Y4-6)Tournament of Minds (TOM) is a creative problem-solving competition for teams of students from either the elementary or the secondary school. More than 20 students started this ECA during session 2 with the expectation to continue TOM into the third session of ECAs. There are still a few spaces for students wishing to join TOM, so read on! This could be the ECA for you!

For those students continuing with TOM and for those new to TOM, during ECA session 3, we will finalize teams for the Tournament and you will have six weeks to work on your long-term challenge before Tournament Day.

OthersWorld Scholar’s CupThis activity will prepare students to represent NIST at The World Scholar's Cup: www.scholarscup.org. Teams of three students will spend several months preparing for the regional competition in Bangkok, to be held in April, and then hopefully, if we advance, for the global grand final in June or July.

Students must compete in four areas: debate, writing, a team challenge and a knowledge bowl. The theme is: A World Transformed – A World in Flux. Students must study materials from Literature, the Arts, History, Science, and a Special Topic: the Modern Metropolis. It is an intellectual event that challenges students to develop teamwork and to approach complex problems from an interdisciplinary perspective. For more information see the YouTube video.
